Friendship cannot last if it is for the sake of friendship. Friendship needs a common object and for Ruth and Naomi that was faith in Yahweh to deliver them. The object of their faith was the promises that God had given them and so Ruth is bold to proclaim where you go, I will go; where you stay, I will stay; and your God will be my God. So too, we have one who went where we have gone, stayed where we have stayed, and on account of him, his Father is now our Father. Jesus Christ has been the truest friend to us and has delivered us from our sin and death. By having everything in common with us, we, now, can share in his death and new life to glory of God the father.
