Johann Gerhard truly knew what it was to feel the affliction of the Law. The guilt it shows to us. The shame it brings upon us. This shame is often too uncomfortable to bear so we place it on others and behave like the Pharisee praying at the temple. Yet what we need is to confess with our hearts that God’s judgement is righteous and we are unclean. Our attitude should be such that we hide our faces from God in recognition of our humble state so that God can lift us up and wipe us clean as a father does a child. Christ cleanses us with his blood and now we can stand with robes washed clean in his blood, holy and innocent before him.
