It is easy in our constant wealth and comfort to treat the things we want as the things that we need. We mix up our conception about what is truly necessary. This is the same with God’s prophets who come with a message, not of prosperity, but of repentance. In the same way, John in prison questioned Christ and had his doubts. It wasn’t what he expected would come with a messiah -- like glory and justice and vengeance. Instead of getting the messiah that he wanted, he preached the way for the one everyone needed. The blind see, the deaf hear, and the necessary good news is preached to the poor.
